Stuart Pearce Suggests Pep Guardiola Could Leave City Sooner Than Many Would Think

Ex-Manchester City player and manager Stuart Pearce believes Pep Guardiola won’t be still in charge at the Etihad in two to three years’ time.

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp has already opted to leave one of City’s rivals, and Pearce says it wouldn’t surprise him if Guardiola decided to do the same in the not-too-distant future:

“I think at any time Pep [Guardiola] might turn round and say it’s been brilliant at City but his time’s up as well. If someone asked if I think he’ll still be in the job in two or three years, I’d say probably not.”

Pearce is clearly just speculating and he doesn’t have any inside knowledge, so City supporters can breathe easy for now, but the Catalan manager will decide to leave the Premier League champions one day.

How long does Guardiola have left on his contract at City?

The 53-year-old’s current deal with the Cityzens expires at the end of next season. In terms of whether that contract will be renewed, we may not find out for a while.

Last time, Guardiola made a decision on an extension with just six months left to go before his deal was set to expire and a similar thing could happen this time around.

What has Guardiola said about his future?

The City head coach last commented on his contract at the end of January, but he was pretty non-committal about an extension at the time, saying:

“We have to see how players’ behaviour is, whether we are keeping our standards, Next year will be nine seasons, which is a lot of time. Extending after two years is not the same as extending after nine. We have a lot of time [to decide]. But now I feel really good.”

“Normally when I decide to extend my contract, the decision is quick. I trust my feelings and instinct and my family is involved. Every time they [City] offer [a new deal], it does not take much time. When I feel it is OK, I feel good, they want me, then OK.”
