‘Not An Option…’ Report Reveals £61.4M Transfer Agreement For City Defender Is Effectively Dead

Bayern Munich are not expected to trigger their option to buy Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo on a permanent basis, according to Kicker.

The German magazine has now confirmed previous reports in England that Bayern will not pay the €70m (£61.4m) purchase clause to keep the fullback beyond the summer.

At the moment, Cancelo is not a regular starter for the Bundesliga champions, with new manager Thomas Tuchel having opted to keep him on the bench for his first game in charge against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.

Kicker says a permanent move for the Portuguese international is “not an option” if the player’s situation doesn’t change. If a deal is to happen, the €70m figure will “have to be renegotiated.”

That means other teams would have a chance to make their own bids for Cancelo. Chelsea have been mentioned as a possible destination, although at this stage there is no firm favourite to sign the player.
