Liverpool can challenge Manchester City this season insists former England star

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright believes Manchester City will face competition from Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.

City strolled to the title last term in record fashion, ending the season with a century of points having won 32 of their 38 top flight games.

The Cityzens closest rivals were Manchester United, who finished 19 points behind them, whilst third placed Tottenham were 23 points adrift, and fourth placed Liverpool were 25 points behind.

But Wright expects City to face a much bigger challenge for the title this time around, specifically from Liverpool, who had an extremely productive summer in the transfer market and kicked off the new campaign in style with a 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday.

“Mo Salah is already up and running, Sadio Mane was deadly, James Milner, Andy Robertson, new keeper Alisson — there is so much depth to them this time,” said Wright speaking on the Reds’ win at the weekend.

“Yet the one who really caught my eye, and I was certainly not the only one, was midfielder Naby Keita.

“Spending as much as Liverpool did brings a whole lot of pressure and that can affect you, especially if the start doesn’t go as expected.

“But they’ve blown away any such fears already and if this is a sign of things to come, they won’t be short of excitement at Anfield.

“It’s pretty obvious there won’t be 25 points between them and City this year and it will be interesting to see how the champions cope with someone snapping at their heels.”

Manchester City next take on Huddersfield this Sunday, whilst Liverpool travel to Crystal Palace on Monday night.
