The Five Players Who Have Hit The Woodwork The Most Times In Premier League History

Generally speaking, when you see a footballer hit the frame of the goal, it is looked upon as being unlucky.

However, you have to take into account the context. Was he striking the ball from 30 yards out or was it a sitter inside the six-yard box? The former is simply unfortunate while the latter is poor finishing.

It will come as no surprise that the players who have made this list are all forwards. They usually have the most shots so they would have the best chance of crashing a shot against the bar or post.

Press the next page as we name the five Premier League players who have hit the woodwork the most times during the Premier League era.

5) Luis Suarez – 26 Times

The Uruguayan only spent three and a half seasons in England but he still managed to find the frame of the goal on a number of occasions.

Suarez was a consummate finisher by the time he left Liverpool but he was rather wasteful when he first arrived on Merseyside, and he seemingly hit the woodwork more often than the average player.

4) Wayne Rooney – 29 Times

Considering that the Manchester United legend scored 208 goals in the top flight and made a total of 491 Premier League appearances, it’s surprising that he didn’t strike the bar or post more regularly.

Rooney was a very clean striker of the ball so perhaps he simply managed to keep more of his shots on target or, at least, away from the frame of the goal.

3) Harry Kane – 31 Times

As we pointed out in the introduction, forwards are very prominent on this list and, despite being a superb finisher, Harry Kane is no exception in terms of striking the woodwork.

The Tottenham striker is seventh on the Premier League all-time scorers list but he is third for hitting the bar and post.

2) Sergio Aguero – 34 Times

Despite only having played 21 more matches than Kane, the Argentine is pretty close in terms of the number of times he has rattled the frame of the goal.

Aguero was usually pinpoint accurate with his shooting and the fact that he only hit the woodwork on 34 occasions in the league over a decade demonstrates how good he was when shooting at goal.

1) Robin van Persie – 44 Times

The Dutchman played almost exactly the same number of games as Aguero did in the English top-flight but the former Arsenal and Manchester United star is way out ahead on his own when it comes to striking the post and bar.

Van Persie hit the frame of the goal, on average, every 6.36 matches, which suggests he was either very unlucky or simply not always the best at sticking away his chances.
