TOP 5 Biggest Spending Premier League Clubs In The 2023 Summer Transfer Window

Josko Gvardiol

Premier League clubs broke the record for transfers during the summer window, spending an incredible £2.44bn on new recruits.

It was £300m more than the last record total, which was £2.14bn last year. Spending in English football continues to rise despite the fact that the global financial climate is far less rosy.

The Premier League seems to be completely isolated from what goes on in other industries and teams continue to shell out sizeable sums to improve their squads.

Press the next page as we name the five biggest spenders this summer (based on figures from SkySports.com).

5) Manchester United – £183.5m

Based on the Red Devils’ start to the season, it doesn’t appear that the added investment in the first-team squad has had the desired effect.

United’s most expensive signing Rasmus Hojlund only made his debut against Arsenal last weekend after arriving at the club injured.

The likes of Mason Mount have not hit the ground running either, while the jury is still out on whether Andre Onana will be an improvement on David De Gea.

Despite spending more than the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle, it is difficult to see any real improvements so far.

4) Arsenal – £208m

After narrowly missing out on the Premier League title last season, the Gunners decided to go big once again this summer to strengthen their squad.

Over half their transfer budget was spent on bringing in Declan Rice from West Ham for £105m.

Based on his early season performances, it looks as though the London club have invested their money wisely.

The Gunners’ other main purchases haven’t worked out as well so far. The £65m that they have shelled out on Kai Havertz looks ill-advised at the moment, while Jurrien Timber has already been sidelined with a serious injury.

3) Tottenham – £212.3m

You would have that the sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich would have seriously damaged Spurs’s prospects of performing well this campaign.

However, under the guidance of manager Ange Postecoglou, the North London club have started the season in great form. In the transfer market, as well, it seems the club have been making the right moves.

Both James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario look like shrewd additions already, although both Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson will need to do a lot to justify their price tags.

All in all, it has been a surprisingly positive transfer window for Tottenham despite Kane’s departure.

2) Manchester City – £216.3m

While City’s presence so high up on this list won’t come as a surprise to anyone, it should be pointed out that their net spend is pretty reasonable.

The Premier League champions have recouped £147.8m through player sales, which has allowed them to spend pretty freely without any concerns about FFP.

Their highest profile recruit is Josko Gvardiol, who joined from RB Leipzig for £77.6m, making him the second most expensive defender in history.

A few surprising names, such as Jeremy Doku (£55.7m) and Matheus Nunes (£53m), have also been brought in.

1) Chelsea – £434.5m

Todd Boehly has now spent over £1bn since he became co-owner of the Blues last year. The club’s funds appear to be limitless.

Chelsea have sold more players this summer, to the tune of £237.3m, in order to balance the books, but they were still outspending their rivals by a sizeable margin.

They broke the British transfer record for the second time in eight months by signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton for £115m.

They also splashed the cash on the likes of Romeo Lavia (£58m), Christopher Nkunku (£52m) and Cole Palmer (£42.5m).
