Manchester City are still interested in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to Correio da Manha.

Despite various reports that the Premier League champions are closing in on a deal for Erling Haaland, the Portuguese tabloid claim that Nunez is being targeted by the Citizens.

The Uruguayan international has been in excellent form so far this season, scoring 26 goals in 33 appearances for Benfica, and his performances have attracted interest from a number of clubs.

Correio da Manha say that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have taken a keen interest in Nunez, in addition to City, and it has led to Benfica increasing their asking price to €80m (£67m).

The likes of West Ham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Newcastle have also been mentioned as potential suitors in the British press and it looks as though there could be a fierce battle for the player’s signature this summer.

In terms of City, it is probably the case that Nunez is being eyed as a potential backup option if a move for Haaland falls through.
